Rules to remember:
1. Verbs that end in -car, -gar, and -zar have spelling changes in the yo form:
tocar -> toqué, tocaste ...
pagar -> pagué, pagaste ...
empezar -> empecé, empezaste
2. No stem changes in the preterite form
3. Accents are very important!

Rules to remember:
1. No stem change for -er verbs, stem change for -ir verbs in 3rd person forms:
competir: competí, competiste, compitió, competimos, competisteis, compitieron
2. An i between two vowels becomes a y:
leo: leí, leiste, leyo, leimos, leisteis, leyeron
3. Conocer in the preterite means "met"
